Following India's partition, his family moved to Delhi, where he completed his education at Hindu College, University of Delhi. Inspired by the legendary actor Dilip Kumar, he adopted the screen name "Manoj Kumar" and stepped into the world of cinema.

Manoj Kumar began his film career with Fashion (1957), but his real breakthrough came in 1965 with Shaheed, a film based on the life of freedom fighter Bhagat Singh. His performance in this patriotic movie earned him widespread recognition. In 1967, he starred in Upkar, a film inspired by Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri’s slogan “Jai Jawan Jai Kisan.” This movie not only showcased his acting skills but also marked his directorial debut. Upkar earned the National Film Award for Second Best Feature Film and established his identity as "Bharat Kumar," a title he carried proudly due to his frequent portrayals of patriotic characters.
